Pottery Class

This year in Co-op we have had several kids in a club called Contenders of the Faith.  It is like a bible based Boy Scouts program for both boys and girls.  One of the activities in the book is to learn about pottery and make some projects.  We were looking forward to this one and it was even better than expected.  Ricky Lack at Fragrant Mushroom was an excellent teacher and he took them through every step of the process.

He demonstrated how to make several items on the potter's wheel.  They were amazed.
They were getting to see where the pottery pieces are fired at over 2000 degrees.

He showing them the glazing process.
Here he is demonstrating how to make a platter.

After seeing many steps in the pottery making process, they got to make something of their own.  He let them make a bowl using the coil method.
Lucas absolutely loved this!

Cameron's actually looked like a bowl.  He did a great job on his.

Lucas added handles to his.  He was very proud of it!

It takes a while for them to dry out completely.  Then they have to be fired, glazed, then fired again.  Hopefully we will get to pick them up soon.  I can't wait to see them finished completely.

During this demonstration I was reminded of Scripture from Isaiah 64:8 "Yet you, LORD, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand."  I shared that verse with the boys because it is always much more memorable with a visual.  I want to be moldable and able to be made into what God wants me to be, yet so often I can be stubborn making me into a hardened lump of clay unable to be molded into anything.
